All-Time Top Songs on Billboard 100
We think it is safe to say that 2022 has been an incredible year for music. Between the mainstream artists making waves, the indie artists taking the world by storm, and the unexpected breakouts no one could have predicted, it has been a great year for music.
American music has a habit of giving great songs to the best artists. Billboard magazine has been charting music since 1958, and each year, they place an “all-time” chart of the top 100 songs. This list comes from 1958 – to 2017, based on Billboard’s 100 most popular songs of all time.
The Billboard 100 is a chart featuring the most popular singles of the week in the US. It combines sales from online, digital, and streaming providers to compile its weekly list. Since Billboard launched the chart in 1958, it has featured many songs that have stood the test of time. Let us look back at the artists, songs, and albums with the longest-lasting records on the Billboard 100.
Closer
The All-Time Top Songs on Billboard 100 chart is the go-to place for music fans to look back on the decades of music history. The chart is based entirely on the weekly year-end music sales charts, updated every week. The chart has been in existence since 1958, and it has been a Billboard staple ever since.
There are many great songs on the charts right now, but there is only one song that stands above the rest: Closer by The Chainsmokers and Halsey. This song, which also features the rap group Migos, was released on October 5, 2017, and skyrocketed to the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 on December 4, 2017. Since its release, Closer has amassed over 1.9 billion streams and crossed 1 billion views on VEVO.
Shape of you
“Shape of you” is one of the All-Time Top Songs on Billboard 100. The song was released as the second single from Ed Sheeran’s third studio album, Divide. The song was written by Sheeran, Jeff Bhasker, and Khalif Brown; the latter produced the song with Sheeran. The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at No. 79 on the chart dated February 8, 2017. It reached number one on the chart dated July 10, 2017, becoming Sheeran’s first number-one single. The song received acclaim from critics, who praised its composition and Sheeran’s vocals.
Gangnam Style
Gangnam Style, the viral video that swept the world by storm in 2012, is one of the most-watched videos on YouTube. (If you do not know the song, you really should check out the video!) This catchy tune was the debut single from Korean singer PSY (real name Park Jae-Sang), and it hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2012. PSY has twice been the best-selling artist on South Korea’s Gaon Chart, and today, Gangnam Style is one of the All-Time Top Songs on Billboard 100.
The Gangnam Style video, one of the all-time top songs on Billboard’s 100, is now the most-watched video on YouTube and has over 1.5 billion views.
Despacito
It has been called the “song of the summer” thanks mainly to its popularity on YouTube, where it’s racked up over 1.4 billion views. Now, we all know about Drake, and we all know about Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, but let us talk about Justin Bieber. The Biebs, who is Canadian, is Puerto Rican and married to a New York girl who is American/Brazilian. In 2016, Bieber released the song “Despacito,” which features Fonsi, and it has actually been on the charts longer than that, even giving Lady Gaga her start.
Bad Blood
One of rock music’s greatest rivalries, Bad Blood between Taylor Swift and Katy Perry, reached a new peak this year when their mega-hits “Bad Blood” and “Bad Dreams” were right on top of the charts. The matching music video was the year’s most watched, with 1 billion YouTube views. Taylor Swift placed first on the Hot 100 with “Bad Blood,” while Katy Perry landed the top spot for “Bad Dreams.”
Bohemian Rhapsody
Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the All-Time Top Songs on Billboard 100. “Bohemian Rhapsody” is the twenty-second single by British rock band Queen, released on 28 October 1975. It reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart on 15 November 1975 and remained there for 15 weeks, as well as reaching No. 2 in Australia, No. 3 in New Zealand, No. 4 in the United States, and No. 9 in the Netherlands. The single has sold 7.2 million singles worldwide, making it Queen’s best-selling single.
Our industry’s All-Time Top Songs on the Billboard chart honor the best of the best in music, and Bohemian Rhapsody is so beloved that it has been in the top spot for a whopping 27 weeks. The song, which has stood the test of time (and Queen), was one of the most iconic songs of the 1990s (And who can forget the film?).
